AND GROWTH OF MASSAGE BUSINESS
Theresa here. I personally wanted to thank everyone that has supported Theresa’s Face and Body throughout our two moves in Cape Coral. We are excited to celebrate our two-year anniversary at our Downtown Cape Coral location. We are very appreciative of the relationships we’ve created, and the growth that we’ve achieved – and couldn’t have done it without you.
I’ve been a massage therapist for over 20 years, and that area of the business has been growing very rapidly. It’s been interesting to note that I’ve been noticing more women and men coming in for Swedish and deep tissue massage therapy. Many clients have told me they are seeking out massage due to workplace aches and pains associated with sitting for hours in front of a computer or standing for long periods of time. I am also seeing an uptick in medical professionals, first responders and senior citizens seeking pain relief and stress reduction.
For those who are seeking body work with a light to medium touch, Swedish massage is the chosen form of massage therapy. The Swedish method uses five types of movements.
1. Effleurage
These are the sliding or gliding Swedish massage movements that cover different areas of the body. These strokes alternate between firm and light pressure and with can be performed using the palm of the hand or the fingertips. This technique is effective to break down knots and relieve muscle tension.
2. Petrissage
This is the technique ofkneading the muscles of the body to attain deeper massage penetration. The thumbs and the knuckles of the fingers are used to knead the muscles of the body and to squeeze them to prepare them for the other Swedish massage techniques that follow.
3. Tapotement
This type of Swedish massage movement uses the cupped hands or fists in a percussive or tapping action to loosen and invigorate the muscles. The sides of the hands are also used with this method.
4. Friction
Brings heat and aids in creating blood flow to the affected areas to help them in recovery. The hands are rubbed vigorously onto the skin which produces heat and break up scar tissue.
5. Vibration and shaking.
This method loosen ups muscles by vibration and shaking of the affected area. Common areas benefitting from this technique include the arms legs, abdomen and back.
The second most popular form of bodywork, Deep tissue massage, focuses on the deeper layers of muscle tissue including the tendons and the fascia which surrounds the muscles, joints and bones. With deep tissue massage the therapist applies deeper pressure to the affected areas. This type of massage therapy is excellent for those with chronic body aches and pains in areas such as the back, shoulders, neck and legs. I always work slowly at first, easing into the area while working within the parameters of what each client’s body can take. I also incorporate stretching into the deep tissue process, because it helps the muscles and tissues relax, and aids in the body getting used to the deep tissue technique.
