In the past few years I have seen a dramatic increase in people seeking out various electrolysis methods as a permanent hair removal solution for excessive hair on the face and body. One of the most common questions I get asked in my consultations is what method of electrolysis do I use. As a certified medical electrologist, I practice a method known as thermolysis. Thermolysis is also known as high frequency, shortwave or diathermy. Thermolysis is the quickest of the electrolysis methods. The other modalities include galvanic which destroys hair by a chemical process and the blend which utilizes both heat and chemical processes. In my practice, I have also found there is less discomfort for my clients with thermolysis.

How is thermolysis performed?

After thoroughly cleansing the face, the electrologist inserts a tiny stainless steel probe into the hair follicle. Heat is produced which destroys the hair, the blood supply and surrounding tissue that nourishes the hair. The hair is then lifted out of the follicle with a stainless steel tweezers. This method of permanent hair removal typically takes just a few second per hair. The intensity and timing of the heat is adjusted according to the thickness of the hair. Once the hair is removed, the electrologist cleanses the skin with alcohol and applies triple antibiotic or cortisone cream to the treated area to speed healing.

Electrolysis is effective on hair on all areas of the body with the exception of the mucus membranes. It can be a solution for men, women and transgendered individuals of all ages with superfluous hair issues. Permanent hair removal can also be great for a self-conscious teenager. Many teens with coarse, dark facial hair are very self-conscious. Investing in electrolysis for your teenager could boost their self-esteem and make their high school years just a little bit easier. Also, electrolysis is the only method of hair removal that has been declared permanent by the FDA.
